Rectal Prolapse

Rectal prolapse, where the back passage (rectum) turns itself out can be an internal and invisible problem in the early stages but as it worsens the rectal prolapse can become clearly visible. Some of the symptoms may be similar to haemorrhoids but careful assessment is required to ensure that there is no alternative or dual pathology present. Both men and women can develop rectal prolpase although it is more common in elderly females. Surgical treatment is available at the Institute but depends on several factors including the results of assessment; the age and physical condition of the patient; and the size of the prolapse.
